I am beginning to think…

I could write a master’s thesis on sexism in gaming.  That, however, would require far more effort than I am willing to put forth at this time and juncture.  It suffices to say, intentionally or not, dudes can be total sexist douchebags in the realm of gaming.  There may be a post on this later, but who knows.

well, in their defense, guys can be selfish douchebags in any arena not just gaming ;p

I do think gaming attracts perhaps a poorer set of socialization than some other fields. In fact i find stereotypical gamers share a lot of the same attitudes and behavior patterns as the stereotypical jock. In some ways worse, because with online gaming it allows a level of safe remove (ie harder for someone to slap you)

This is why in my WoW guild I try to surround myself with people who aren’t assholes. We usually try to recruit from the older crowd, most of our players are wives and husbands who play together.

I also just avoid Trade and General chat entirely.

I have also been lucky in WOW….I hang out in a beginners guild with like 200 people though and STAY away from chat rooms!

I never really got into gaming, though I joined WoW for a while to play with a (girl) friend of mine. Couldn’t even try to take over since I didn’t know that much and she’s kind of pushy – a characteristic I like.

I usually find myself too busy with lovers and others I’d rather socialize with. Getting out of the house is refreshing and I get tired of the 4 walls.

I seem to recall we once covered this at length back at the old LiveJournal. Of course that was mostly about geeks in general, but it points as to why they tend to be very sexist in games. Which is funny as hell.
